Our Food – The Science Explained
How to determine a Good Quality Food
The best way to determine the quality of any dog food is to carefully read and understand the label and ingredients. While reading the label, ask the following questions:
• Does the food use high quality natural ingredients?
• Is there a quality meat / fish source as the first ingredient?
NOTE: Ingredients on food labels, including animal feed, are always listed in descending order by weight.
• Better yet, are the ingredients human-grade?
• Is the preservative used natural or artificial?
• Is the bag dated for freshness?
WHITES PREMIUM INGREDIENTS
Each food in our range contains several, but not all, of the ingredients listed below:
The chicken, lamb and Fish in Whites Premium are all human grade and of the highest quality. No animal / fish derivatives are used.
CHICKEN – is a good protein source with a balanced amino acid mix.
LAMB – is a good protein source rich in calcium and is an excellent source of zinc.
FISH – is an excellent quality protein source that is also highly palatable. It also contains good levels of omega 6 and omega 3 which consist of polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA and EPA.
RICE – is a complex carbohydrate and is the most digestible of all grains. Rice is highly nutritious, being rich in unsaturated fatty acids and B Vitamins and helps maintain energy levels throughout the day. Rice is known to be low in allergy risk and is therefore used in hypo-allergenic foods.
POULTRY FAT – is better quality than ‘animal fats’ as it is from chicken or turkey and you know what you are getting! Due to the nature of animal fats, they tend to be preserved with artificial preservatives such as BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin to prevent rancidity as they are hard to preserve. Poultry fat is a good quality fat source that is highly palatable and can be preserved with natural antioxidants (we use vitamin E as mixed Tocopherols).
Fats are essential for good health, particularly of the skin, and provide valuable energy.
SUGAR BEET PULP – is a good source of insoluble and soluble fibres, helping to maintain bowel health and prevent colon cancer, and is packed full of iron.
CARROTS – are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds, and the richest vegetable source of the pro-vitamin A carotenes. Carrots’ antioxidant compounds help protect against cancer, are beneficial for heart health and vision. Like all vegetables they are high in dietary fibre.
PEAS – are rich in iron, are a very good source of vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin B1 and folic acid. They are also a good source of vitamin B6, riboflavin – B2, and niacin – B3. They are high in dietary fibre.
GREEN BEANS – are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. They are also a very good source of vitamin A (notably through their concentration of carotenoids including beta-carotene), dietary fibre, potassium, folate and iron. And, green beans are a good source of magnesium, thiamine, riboflavin, copper, calcium, phosphorus, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and niacin.
BREWERS YEAST – is known as nature’s wonder food. It is an excellent source of all the major B vitamins.
BARLEY – is an easily digestible carbohydrate full of goodness and fibre that is used as a component of various health foods.
OATS – are a versatile ingredient used as a fibre source, also providing a good source of energy. They contain their own unique antioxidant that is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
MAIZE – is a rich source of complex carbohydrates and nutrients such as essential fatty acids. Whole maize, as in carnet from corn-on-the-cob, might be difficult to digest, however, our maize has been thoroughly ground to remove the outside covering of each kernel to enable digestibility.
WHEAT – is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and nutrients. It is an ingredient found in the Vitality Muesli (a traditional muesli type working dog food) to provide increased energy.
FISH OILS – contain large amounts of Omega 3 which can help reduce inflammation associated with stiff joints and arthritis. Omega 3 may also prevent certain cardiac problems and keep the heart healthy in to older age, and has many health benefits.
SUNFLOWER OIL – is a high quality fat source as it is very high in linoleic acid, Omega 6 content and supplies more Vitamin E than any other vegetable oil. It is a combination of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with low saturated fat levels.
SALMON LIVER – contains high levels of vitamin A and is an excellent source of Omega 3.
YUCCA EXTRACT – is a natural deodoriser that helps reduce flatulence.
SEAWEED – is a great source of iodine and minerals.
EGG – is an extremely digestible source of protein as well as providing vitamins and minerals.
LINSEEDS – are high in omega 3 fatty acids, especially alpha linolenic acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon, and are effective in bowel cleansing and maintaining regularity.
GARLIC – aids digestion and is high therapeutic.
HERBS – provide health benefits and contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
TOCOPHEROLS – from vitamin E are a naturally occurring antioxidant used to naturally preserve the food (the use of Tocopherols in a dog food, as opposed to artificial preservatives, is a good indication of a high quality food)
PREBIOTIC FOS (Fructooligosaccharides) – provides a specific food source for the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria. F.O.S. encourages peristaltic motion, exerting a positive influence on bowel activity and evacuation.
GLUCSOMAINE – is an amino sugar that is the starting point for production of new cartilage, and is fundamental to maintaining joint function.
CHONDROITIN – is a major component of cartilage. The key function of Chondrotin is to attract fluid into cartilage, maintaining the spongy texture. This is essential to absorb shock and nourish and lubricate the joints.
MSM – is a naturally occurring sulphur compound which helps soothe knocks, bumps, bruises and sprains.
ASH – as listed in the typical analysis as a percentage, isn’t an ingredient that is added but is the total mineral content of the product after incineration.
MEAL (fish meal) is prepared by the heating, drying and grinding of meat or fish. (Meals must be free from hooves, horn, bristle, hair and feathers as well as digestive tract content).
